Production quotas are administered by the of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers and not by the Citadelle Maple Syrup Producers’ Cooperative.
Since the creation of a Sales Agency in 2002, maple syrup payment has been handled by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers , based on annual syrup sales.
A member may withdraw from the Cooperative and receive his or her qualification shares:
By providing notice in writing 30 days before the expiration date of the member’s contract;
When the member sells his or her sugar bush;
In case of death.
Supporting documentation is required (sale, death).
They are shares with a par value of one dollar ($1) each, with no fixed maturity or interest. The board of directors can issue investment shares to any individual or company and determines the share amounts, privileges, rights, and restrictions, as well as conditions for their repurchase, reimbursement, or transfer. Investment shares may be issued as a series in the same class (See item 3 B in the by-laws and general rules).
Investment shares are created out of the Cooperative’s surplus earnings, and are voted on at the annual general meeting.
Investment shares of a member who withdraws from the Cooperative do not automatically become redeemable. The Law on Cooperatives provides for their repurchase after a minimum of three years from the share issue date. After this period, the decision to repurchase is left to the discretion of the board of directors, depending upon the Cooperative’s financial situation.
When the board of directors issues its approval for a given year, any producer holding investment shares for that year is reimbursed.
To be a Cooperative member, all producers are required to purchase 100 qualifying shares at a nominal value of $10 each.
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ) represents all producers in the province—membership is mandatory. It sells syrup in bulk to authorized buyers and provincial producers receive payment based on the amount of syrup sold and negotiated prices.
Citadelle Maple Syrup Producers’ Cooperative represents nearly 2,000 producers who have voluntarily chosen to handle retail and industrial marketing on their own. It has a growing international sales network.
